A cavalry helmet of the mid-1st century AD found at Witcham Gravel, Ely, Cambridgeshire. The helmet consists of a bronze sheathing over an iron skull-cap. The sheathing is tinned on the crown, neck-guard and cheek-pieces and is decorated with bronze bosses. Scribed lines and six rivets on the crown reveal that it was originally fitted with a permanent crest-box. (The Trustees of the British Museum)

The end of the Equites Singulares Augusti is obscure. They disappear from our view when inscriptional evidence dries up in the 260s, and they may not have survived into the 4th century.
